Our 1st Real Event

Myles took the plunge and being well networked in Bakewell he managed to get us a last minute spot at the Bakewell Christmas fair,  30th Nov/1st Dec 2013.  We had just over 5 weeks to prepare, we had nothing but what we thought was some amazing food….so next up we had to figure out how we cooked this on a market stall rather than in a kitchen.  Again testing was done with different ovens, toasters and grills.  We finally made a decision and ended up buying 2 mini ovens, a gas barbecue, tables, decorations and a whole load of other stuff we thought we needed. A test run was done in the kitchen and the whole process seemed to work.  ‘We might as well give it a try’ said Myles ‘What have we got to lose.’  The moment had come, had this been over 6 months of thinking we had a good idea or was it something people were going to be prepared to pay for….and would they like it?

We set up on a cold winters morning, I get a call from Myles at 8am, ‘Nick we have a small problem, no electricity’….oh no would it fail before we even started?  ‘Don’t worry leave it with me…’ Myles then managed to sweet talk the Co-op and we plugged into the exhibition trailer next to us…life saver!  This was the first time we and ever set up the operation but finally we agreed on a layout and just wanted to get selling.  The BBQ was lit, ovens turned on and we officially opened for business.  What a day, we not only served everyone within 5 minutes of ordering but we survived a lunchtime rush, everyone got their order and all our customers seemed very happy!

Day two was an even greater success, confident in our process we gave every customer a card with 2 options, loved the food or try again – we had a 100% positive feedback.  These early discussions and feedback from our customers would proof vital in the development of our offer.

By the end of day two we had taken £900 and covered all of our initial investment in equipment, but for us the most pleasing thing was the response to our food offer, it gave us the confidence to do more…
